In addition to university tuition and housing, overseas students studying in Australia must fund medical and hospital charges. Your health is just as important as your academic ambitions. International students, however, do not have access to Medicare. Instead, a specific health coverage known as OSHC, or Overseas Student Health Cover, has been established in Australia for overseas applicants.
OSHC is an international student health insurance coverage that covers medical and hospital expenses. To be considered eligible for medical expenditures coverage while in Australia, the applicant must acquire this health policy.
The foreign student applicant and any dependents, if any, must get health insurance coverage that covers the duration of the academic term.
Students who have enrolled in courses lasting three months or fewer can obtain a tourist visa as well as private international student insurance coverage that covers this time period.
International applicants who want to visit or work in Australia are required to apply for Overseas Visitor Health Coverage, or OVHC. This policy applies to several visa types, including:
- Visitor Visas: Subclasses 300, 580, 590, 600, 601
- Bridging Visas
- Working Visas: Subclasses 482, 485, 400,401, 476, 489, etc.
- Working Holiday Visas: Subclasses 417 & 462
