Navigating E-VISA and CAS Changes

The UK student visa process has recently undergone significant updates, introducing new procedures and guidelines that aim to streamline the experience for international students. These changes include the transition to E-VISA, updates to living expenses requirements, and a revised Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) process. Here’s a detailed overview of what these updates mean for prospective students.

E-VISA Introduction

The introduction of E-VISA marks a major shift in how international students manage their visa documentation.

  1. BRP Card Replacement:
    The Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card production officially ceased as of October 31, 2024. However, existing BRP cards will remain valid until December 31, 2024. This provides students with a transition period to adapt to the new system.

  2. Online UKVI Account:
    Students are now required to create an online UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. Through this portal, they can access and manage their E-VISA, which serves as their primary visa documentation.

  3. Benefits of E-VISA:

    • Digital convenience with secure online access.
    • Faster updates and reduced risk of lost physical cards.

Updated Living Expenses Criteria

Effective January 2025, the UK government has revised living expense requirements for student visa applicants, impacting how much students need to show for financial proof.

  1. London Requirements:

    • -> 9 months: £13,347
    • -> 1 month: £1,483
  2. Outside London Requirements:

    • -> 9 months: £10,224
    • -> 1 month: £1,136
  3. Maximum Offset:

  4. Students can offset their financial proof by £1,483 per month. Some universities are expected to adopt these criteria as early as December 2024.

CAS Process Update

The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) process now accommodates delays in visa outcomes, ensuring minimal disruption for students.

Course Start Delays:
If a visa decision is delayed beyond the course start date, students are no longer required to withdraw their application.

  1. New CAS Issuance:
    Universities can issue a new CAS, provided the next intake is within six months of the previous start date. Importantly, the new CAS will be directly linked to the old one, simplifying the process.

Why These Changes Matter

These updates aim to modernize and simplify the visa process for students, making the UK an even more attractive destination for higher education. By moving to a digital visa system, revising financial requirements, and offering greater flexibility with CAS, the UK demonstrates its commitment to supporting international students.
