The 485 Visa allows international graduates to temporarily live, study, and work in Australia after completing an eligible qualification from an Australian institution. This visa has three streams:

Graduate Work Stream

Designed for international students who graduated with qualifications relevant to occupations on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). You can live, study, and work in Australia for up to 18 months. Family members can be added to your application, and the visa serves to meet Australian business needs.

Processing Times

  • 25% processed in 9 months
  • 50% processed in 9 months
  • 75% processed in 10 months
  • 90% processed in 12 months

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you must:

  • Hold a recent Student Visa (Subclass 500) within the past six months
  • Be under 35 years old
  • Meet the Australian Study Requirement
  • Have relevant skills and qualifications for an occupation listed on the MLTSSL
  • Provide proof of English language proficiency, health insurance, and character requirements

Costs & Stay Duration

The visa costs AUD 1,680 for the primary applicant, and the stay period is up to 18 months. However, for visas granted from December 1, 2021, this period has been temporarily extended to 24 months. British National Overseas and Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to five years.

Post-Study Work Stream

For recent graduates from Australian institutions who completed a degree, the Post-Study Work stream allows for 2 to 4 years of stay, depending on your qualification. Bachelor’s or master’s degree holders can stay for 2 years, master’s by research graduates can stay 3 years, and Ph.D. graduates can stay for up to 4 years.

  • 90% processed in 11 months

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you must:

  • Be under 35 years of age
  • Hold an eligible degree from a CRICOS-registered course
  • Have applied for or held a Student Visa (Subclass 500) after November 5, 2011
  • Have evidence of health insurance and required English language proficiency
  • Meet health and character standards

Costs & Stay Duration

The cost is AUD 1,680. Stay periods range from 2 to 4 years, depending on the degree. For Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders, the stay can be up to 5 years.

Second Post-Study Work Stream

Graduates from regional Australian institutions who hold a first Temporary Graduate visa under the post-study work stream can apply for this stream. It allows them to live and work in Australia for an additional 2 to 4 years.

  • Hold a Temporary Graduate Visa under the Post-Study Work stream
  • Have resided in a designated regional area for at least 2 years

Costs for this visa stream start at AUD 660. The stay period is 2 to 4 years depending on the regional area where you studied and lived.
