A simplified program called GTI seeks to entice highly qualified individuals to work and settle permanently in Australia. It is intended to lure talented foreign workers to Australia from seven areas with a focus on the future. These industries are:
- Resources
- Agri-food and AgTech
- Energy
- Health Industries
- Defence, Advanced Manufacturing and Space
- Circular Economy
- DigiTech
- Infrastructure and Tourism
- Financial Services and FinTech
- Education
The applicant must be worldwide renowned for their exceptional achievements and be able to command a salary of at least AUD158,500 in order to be considered. The candidate must also be well-known in his or her field and have no trouble finding work in Australia.

Most recent figures for GTI
According to a government announcement, the GTI program will have 15,000 spots available for the 2020–2021 academic year. 1,513 applicants who submitted an EOI have thus far (1 July 2020–10 December 2020) been asked to apply for the visa. A breakdown of this figure shows that each month, about 280 visas were issued. The following is the table that the Department of Home Affairs has provided:

As of December 22, 2020, there were roughly 6,789 EOIs in the backlog even though many of them were still being handled.
The data presented regarding the GTI application showed that between 4 November 2019 and 30 November 2020, 53 applications were rejected, and a total of 142 applications were withdrawn.
Division by target sector
According to data from the Department of Home Affairs, the target industries with the highest visa grants are ICT, Quantum Information, Advanced Digital, and Digital Science. This is probably due to the fact that the target industries for quantum information, advanced digital, data science, and ICT account for the majority of the visa applications submitted during this time. This information pertains to the time frame of 1 July 2020 to 12 July 2021.
